Jack Van Impe Exposed
The Shaw Media's Global TV "Conscience of Convenience" vs. Good Corporate Citizenship
For 12 years Global has spread Van Impe's message of fear, hate, intolerance, bigotry and please buy our merchandise and it has to stop. Global TV in Winnipeg airs The Jack Van Impe Ministries Presents, Sunday at 8:30 a.m.. At this hour many children are watching cartoons or adventure shows and their parents are doing chores or whatever. The last thing they need to hear is the world is going to end on Dec. 21/2012 or that there is going to be a horrible war and only a certain brand of Christian will be saved. This doom and gloom message is insidious and his anti Islamic rhetoric is simply outrageous and dangerous. On May 31/09 Jack Van Impe looked into the camera and said, "Christianity is at war with Islam". Two Sundays later he regurgitated this gem..."Muslims hate Jews". Lately he has said Kaleik Sheik Mohammed should be executed without trial (lynching) and that alcoholics and drug addicts are sinners and will not go to heaven. AA will not appreciate that stupid remark.
On February 24/09, Mr G. complained to the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council that Global TV was broadcasting messages of hate and fear and that Global TV needed to insert a verbal warning to parents stating the following program is not suitable for anyone under 14 and the content may offend some people. That's all he asked. Global's reply was NO and that Van Impe's remarks were "his opinion" implying religious freedom of speech. Freedom of Speech (there is no such thing as "religious freedom of speech") is an American term in the First Amendment of the US Constitution Bill of Rights. Canada has freedom of speech but there are laws restricting what can be said especially when one religion attacks another religion or race etc.. The CAB Code of Ethics and The Television Broadcast Act state it's the broadcasters responsibility to ensure no offensive remarks are aired. The response received to the complaint from Global was deceptive. Read following letter from Global's Regulatory Affairs manager Karen Clout.
Re: Jack Van Impe Presents (CBSC File C08/09-0691)
Dear Mr. G.
We are in receipt of your letter via the CBSC regarding Global Television's broadcast of Jack Van Impe Presents, January 25, 2009 at 8:30am on CKND Global Winnipeg. In your letter, you have expressed concerns regarding inappropriate content: violence and language. Let me begin by saying that as responsible broadcasters, we are sensitive to the members of our viewing audience and we apologize if this show offended you; I assure you that it was not our intention to do so.
Under the Broadcasting Act, broadcasters are required to provide a broad spectrum of entertainment and information programming for "men, women and children of all ages, interests and tastes. Television programming is required to be diverse and appealing to a wide range of audiences. Before we decide to broadcast a program, our Programming Department screens it to ensure it is suitable for broadcast. The determination of suitability includes ensuring that the broadcast would not contravene applicable broadcast laws and industry codes including, but not limited to, the Canadian Association of Broadcasters' (CAB) "Code of Ethics", "Equitable Portrayal Code for Television and Radio Programming", and "CAB Violence Code". As a result, what one viewer might consider an interesting or informative program might lead another to turn the channel.
Clause 8 of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) Code of Ethics states:
Broadcasters should endeavour to make available to the community adequate opportunity for presentation of religious messages and should also endeavour to assist in all ways open to them the furtherance of religious activities in the community.
Jack Van Impe Presents is a religious program featuring American televangelist Jack Van Impe and his wife citing passages from the scripture and compares what is written, to how it relates (in his opinion) to the events going on in the world today. With the above in mind, the following disclaimers are aired at the top of every broadcast. 'The opinions expressed in the following program are those of the participant and do not necessarily reflect those of Global Television.'
Michelle Medford under the direction of Karen Clout manager of regulatory affairs (the deceivers) from Global TV wrote the above drivel not once but in 3 responses. She failed to add the 2nd half of clause 8, read it and you will see why. Scroll down a bit for CAB Clause 8 in it's entirety, the red text is the part she left out. Readers can go to the CBSC website (see link below) to verify. It's time for the Global TV programming director to step up and take responsibility for his/her poor judgment in airing Jack Van Impe Presents when they know full well they are breaking The Television Broadcast Act (which is the LAW), the CAB Code of Ethics as well as Human Right Act (the LAW). If the response received from Global TV is full of deception and outright lies we're going to call them on it. When asked, Medford seems to think it's okay for shows like the Family Guy or CSI to have to verbal warning but she says it's up to parents to monitor their children when it comes to Jack Van Impe Presents. The whole idea of the warnings (AVGOT) is to provide another tool for parents to help them make sure their kids aren't watching programs like Jack Van Impe Presents.
CAB Code of Ethics: Clause 8 - Religious Programming:
"Broadcasters should endeavour to make available to the community adequate opportunity for presentation of religious messages and should also endeavour to assist in all ways open to them the furtherance of religious activities in the community.
Recognizing the purpose of the religious broadcast to be that of promoting the spiritual harmony and understanding of humanity and of administering broadly to the varied religious needs of the community, it shall be the responsibility of each broadcaster to ensure that its religious broadcasts, which reach persons of all creeds and races simultaneously, shall not be used to convey attacks upon another race or religion."
How convenient... leave out the part (in the itialics text) which shows Global breaking the CAB Code of Ethics clause 8.
CAB Code of Ethics: Clause 2 - Human Rights
Recognizing that every person has the right to full and equal recognition and to enjoy certain fundamental rights and freedoms, broadcasters shall ensure that their programming contains no abusive or unduly discriminatory material or comment which is based on matters of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, marital status or physical or mental disability.
Television Broadcasting Regulations, 1987 - Programming Content
5. (1) A licensee shall not broadcast
(a) anything in contravention of the law;
(b) any abusive comment or abusive pictorial representation that, when taken in context, tends to or is likely to expose an individual or a group or class of individuals to hatred or contempt on the basis of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age or mental or physical disability;
(c) any obscene or profane language or pictorial representation; or
(d) any false or misleading news.
Global breaks regulation 5 (b) and (d). Van Impe attacks other groups on a regular basis, come to think of it that's all he does, that's what the show is about ... hate and fear.
Canadian Human Rights Act (R.S., 1985, c. H-6) - Hate messages
13. (1) It is a discriminatory practice for a person or a group of persons acting in concert to communicate telephonically or to cause to be so communicated, repeatedly, in whole or in part by means of the facilities of a telecommunication undertaking within the legislative authority of Parliament, any matter that is likely to expose a person or persons to hatred or contempt by reason of the fact that that person or those persons are identifiable on the basis of a prohibited ground of discrimination.
Advertising Standards rule 11: Superstitions and Fears
"Advertisements must not exploit superstitions or play upon fears to mislead the consumer".
This show exists on exploiting people's superstitions and fears. He tries to frighten people into buying his dvd's. We feel children, morons, idiots, the elderly, lonely and infirm are targets of Van Impe. Unfortunately the Advertising Standards have no jurisdiction (a huge loophole) as Jack Van Impe Ministries presents is USA based paid religious programming. However after our investigation JVIM has Charitable Tax Donation status and is incorporated in Canada thus the program is Canadian.
Everyone needs to remember that Jack Van Impe Ministries Presents is really an infomercial. The Van Impe Ministries pays Global TV to broadcast the program with the revenue from selling his garbage DVD's and phoney baloney prophecy bible to Canadians. It's the same in the USA he pays FOX Q13 in Seattle. It's one thing to be spreading hate on the Christian TV channels but mainstream media like Fox and Global TV is disgraceful.
Jack Van Impe Ministries gets it's revenue via a $24.95 "donation" for his dvd's and $59.95 for Jack Van Impe's version of the Bible. We recently checked Alexa and almost 16% of his website traffic is Canadian so let's assume that 16% of his sales come from Canada as well. The poor suckers that are frightened by his end of days prophecies purchase his dvd's in order to save themselves or at least find out what they are trying to save themselves from. It is a scam. Again, Jack Van Impe Ministries pays Global TV to air his fear mongering and frightened people in Canada send their hard earned cash to the USA. Nothing stays in Canada except Shaw Media (Global's) "cut" or "broadcast fee". Jack Van Impe Ministries has a P.O. Box in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, across the river from Detroit and Troy Michigan, where the Van Impe Ministries headquarters is located. You can watch a better version, better picture, more ranting against Muslims on FOX 13 in Seattle. Watch Van Impe on FOX instead of Global TV, he's the warm up Act for FOX NEWS Sunday w/ the most intolerant "CONtributors" Brett Hume, Carl Rove, William Kristol and company. The Jack Van Impe Ministries does NOTHING in Canada to help the poor or infirm. There are no food banks, food kitchens, shelters or social programs not even a church service.
